I'm... I'm sorry, Mettaton.

[He's still a little shaken up, but he'd never hold that against his friend. There's a small pang of guilt there, for lashing out.]

Let's get out of here. I think this place is starting to mess with our heads.

[Asriel looks down at the floor for a moment. He looks back up to see Mettaton's form
shift into that of a man with a cruel smile, with a gash cut deep into his neck. Asriel let's out a startled cry before the image fades.

Like he was seeing a ghost.]

[And now Asriel was alarmed by something. Mettaton's head whips back around, but the image is blurring again, this time into something less offensive, but still emotionally devastating.

He'd recognize that skeleton anywhere, and the sight makes Mettaton's SOUL go cold. God...he missed seeing that tall monster, hearing his voice and enjoying the aura of positivity surrounding him.

He wanted to believe that this was real...perhaps even at the expense of Asriel...]

[...Fortunately, or perhaps unfortunately, Mettaton is quick to dismiss this vision as a fake. Papyrus would never come back.

He's being a fool, feeling these emotions for people who he will never see again. Can someone who hurts others really hope to have a reward waiting? And what a terrible friend he is, to trade the one person who he could still depend on for a phantom of a long-gone flame.]

[He asks it quietly, hoping that inaction and a flat tone might help break the illusion.]

Whatever it is...unless it's Mettaton, it isn't real. Remember that, honey. I'm your friend, just like you are mine. You're right--this place is doing something terrible.

[Asriel's still reeling, enough that he barely notices that Mettaton is seeing someone else. He rubs at his eyes quickly, giving a quick glance at his hands to see if they were bloody - they weren't, thankfully. His disk isn't out, isn't covered in blood, and Mettaton isn't...]

I-I... it's nothing.

[Mettaton wouldn't want to hear that he looked like his dead owner for a few seconds.]

We... just have to remember that we're both real. This place is tricking us with illusions. We can't...

[Mettaton's form shifts for a second - into an image of Toriel. It takes all of Asriel's effort not to lose his composure.]

It's trying to get into our heads.

The Intermediaries have done nothing but get into our heads. This was...this was a bad idea.

[Mettaton reaches a hand out.]

If you trust me...let me carry you. Then we won't see each other.

[They won't see the lies. Mettaton is having a really hard time already...he can't bear much more mental attack.]

Let's leave...we can't help.

[He takes Mettaton's hand, being careful not to look at him. Asriel doesn't think he can handle another vision.]

Let's go somewhere safe. ... Heh, wherever that is, right?

[Mettaton takes hold of Asriel's hand, gripping it tightly. They were going to get through this for now.

...He can't really say what'll happen past that, but between them both, they were of no use at this point. If he couldn't see the right things, then he'd FIGHT the wrong ones. That's what the Intermediaries wanted.

He wouldn't acquiesce.

So after a bit of hesitation, he picks Asriel up, holding him close but not looking. He can't.

But what he can do is find where they'd come from. They weren't safe here...

[This whole situation was too much trouble.

... He's too much trouble, isn't he? Causing illusions that weren't there, being the source of Chara's distress, the cause of Frisk's worry and self-doubt. And there was no relief from it. He was running from place to place, just trying to avoid the sound of gunfire. Trying to keep himself from freezing up in panicked terror at the sight of kill squads, forcing himself to keep moving although with each gunshot it feels like he's back at the village again. The terror is raw, and he can't even let himself slow down long enough to feel it - because if he does, he dies.

He wasn't even useful here.

He buries his face in Mettaton's shoulder as he's picked up. It doesn't feel like Mettaton lifting him, but he won't look up to see who his robot friend has taken the form of now.

He just wants to leave.]
