Canon Personality:
Asriel is a friendly and caring child, who goes out of his way to help others. When the first human, Chara, fell into the Underground, it was Asriel who found them. After seeing how badly injured Chara was and hearing their calls for help, Asriel came to their rescue and took them back to his parents to treat their wounds. Despite not knowing much about Chara, Asriel readily accepted them into his family and grew attached to them as both a friend and sibling. Judging by his incredibly strong attachment to Chara, it's implied that they were really Asriel's only friend. But as far as Asriel was concerned, Chara was the only friend he needed. A lot of his free time was spent playing with Chara, and the both of them indulged in games and pranks. Asriel himself even showed off his mischievous side around Chara by playing light-hearted pranks of his own, even managing to trick Chara into smiling for him when he pretends to use a camera to film him.
Even though Asriel is kind and gentle to those around him, his kindness leads him to be somewhat of a pushover. He's described as being a crybaby, to the point where Chara scolds him for it. And when he feels guilty or ashamed of something he's done, it sticks with him for a long time. For example, when he and Chara bake a cake for their father, they accidentally use the wrong ingredients that make him really sick. When Chara brings it up later, Asriel confesses that he wished he could've laughed it off like they did.
Asriel is heavily influenced by Chara and looks up to them, which makes it easy for Asriel to get dragged into their plans. Chara encouraged Asriel to help them find a way to free the monsters of the Underground. Asriel, who deeply trusted Chara, wanted to do his part to help set everyone free. So when Chara came up with the idea to poison themselves and have Asriel absorb his soul to break through the barrier, Asriel reluctantly agreed to their plan. Although for Asriel, he was naive enough to not fully realize the consequences of their plan. When Chara died after poisoning themselves, Asriel immediately became distraught and wracked with guilt at losing his friend. Still, he remained committed to their plan of freeing the Underground and took Chara's soul and body to the surface. Unfortunately, despite Asriel having complete faith in Chara's plan, Chara attempts to take control of his body to attack the humans once they were on the surface. Asriel, unwilling to cause any harm to the humans, resisted Chara's control and was killed by the humans on the surface. Asriel's death resulted in him being reborn later as Flowey.
Flowey the Flower is the soulless form of Asriel. And since a soul is a vital to monsters in order to feel love and compassion, Asriel is reborn without being able to express any of the love or kindness he had prior to his death. All of his feelings of despair and loneliness are expressed through Flowey, usually when he interacts with Frisk on his journey. During the genocide route, Flowey tells a story about how he woke up in the garden, terrified when he couldn't feel his arms or legs. After being found and cared for by his parents, he realized that he doesn't feel anything for them in return. In an attempt to find something that can make him feel love again, and by extension, happiness, he leaves his parents behind. But despite helping as many people as he can, and then using his new powers of "resetting" to kill everyone, he still feels just as empty and unable to feel any kind of joy.
Asriel ultimately adopts the philosophy of "kill or be killed" after he becomes Flowey. Because of his and Chara's deaths, he becomes jaded and guilt-ridden over his decision to refuse to fight back when he was being attacked. He ends up blaming himself for their deaths, and assumes that the rest of the world is a place where only the strongest and the ones willing to kill are the only ones worthy of surviving.
Asriel tries forcing this belief onto Frisk, in an attempt to mold Frisk to be more like Chara. At every step of Frisk's journey, Asriel as Flowey tries to challenge Frisk's ideals. In the genocide route, if Frisk does adopt a "kill or be killed" attitude and becomes Chara, Asriel expresses joy and relief at having his friend back. But his joy ends up turning to fear when he realizes that Chara will kill him without hesitation. In the pacifist route, Asriel tries to project Chara onto Frisk in a desperate attempt to have his friend back. And more importantly, Asriel is so desperately lonely that he's willing to ignore that Frisk isn't Chara and begs him to stay with him. Asriel even goes as far as absorbing all the souls in the Underground, gaining a god-like power, in order to reset everything so that he can go back to be a happy, carefree child. Or at least, he wants to keep "Chara" from leaving him again.
After being defeated and saved by Frisk, Asriel shows disgust at his behavior as Flowey. He tells Frisk that he did so many horrible things to his friends and family. He even tries to distance himself from his actions a little, saying to Frisk how he "did some pretty weird stuff as a flower". He never wanted to be the cause of someone else's suffering, which is why he struggles so much accepting the things he did as Flowey. He refuses to see his parents before they leave for the surface because he doesn't want to break their hearts when he has to return to being a soulless flower again.
Asriel then makes the ultimate sacrifice. He gives up the souls he absorbed to break the barrier and free all monsters, while knowing it would mean he'd return to being the soulless Flowey again. While this wouldn't be an easy decision to make, Asriel makes it without hesitation, which shows Asriel's inner strength and how he faces hard decisions. Even at the cost of himself and his own happiness, he still tries to do what's best for others. While he doesn't regret his decision, he does sadly admit that he doesn't want to let go when Frisk comforts him. All this shows that despite having his moments of being a pushover, Asriel is extremely strong-willed individual.
Despite everything, Asriel still holds onto his cynical view of the world. He mentions to Frisk that not all problems can be solved by being nice, and there's a lot of "Floweys" out on the surface. This outlook is partially influenced by all the hatred and pain that Asriel felt as Flowey, which caused him to lose his child-like innocence. Despite his somewhat bitter attitude, he still encourages and believes in Frisk's kindness. So even though he can't be completely saved, he's still shown that there's hope for both humans and monsters.
Personality Shifts:
When Kyubey approached Asriel in the Ruins, offering him a once-in-a-lifetime chance to leave the Underground and become a magi, it felt like the perfect deal.
Instead of turning back into Flowey and living in isolation as monsterkind started their new life on the Surface, he would instead get to make a wish. In exchange, Asriel would form a contract with Kyubey to become a magi and protect humanity from creatures called Nightmares. Desperate to save himself, he didn't bother questioning the offer. Asriel made his wish.
"I don't want to forget how to feel love."
And with that, Asriel's contract was sealed and he was whisked off to the city of Nyoi-Cho. Although he barely understood what being a magi was, he was dropped into the role almost immediately along with a group of others who had similarly made contracts with Kyubey.
From there, Asriel struggled to adjust to his new life. Despite agreeing to a contract in which Asriel would have to fight for the rest of his life or risk turning into a Nightmare himself, this new world he was thrown into was surprisingly exciting for the young monster. He slowly developed his new magical abilities, had a permanent home on a "Surface", and formed friendships with his fellow magi. He existed in an environment where he could live peacefully and where he felt he had purpose. Fighting and protecting the residents of Nyoi-Cho while working alongside his new magi allies allowed him to work through the guilt of what he'd done as Flowey, without actually having to face it. As far as Asriel was concerned, he could leave the Underground and everything he'd done there far behind him and begin a new, better life.
Because of this, his "kill or be killed" attitude really started to subside over time. Sure, that philosophy applied when it came to fighting Nightmares, but his cynical attitude was starting to fade. For several months, he strongly believed that what he was doing was the best path for him to grow into a better person. Even with a few hiccups along the way, such as the frightening experience of turning into a Nightmare himself, it didn't deter him from wanting to be a good magi.
August was what first put a dent in his growing, optimistic attitude. A game was announced over a website, in which magi were pitted against other magi in order to gain "happiness points" that would bring a magi good luck. Pranking, attacking, and even murder were options to steal points from other magi to give to themselves. While Asriel tried to hold out on playing, he witnessed his teammates turning on each other for higher scores. After the damage was done, Asriel began to question if what he was doing was really the right thing, and if they could still call themselves heroes after what had happened during the game. After a while, Asriel still clung to the belief that he was doing the right thing, because protecting Nyoi-Cho and becoming a better magi was all he had. Still, he never quite forgot the incident.
The following month, Asriel's attempt to leave his past behind and forgotten was interrupted by the arrival of Mettaton. Out of every magi Asriel has ever met, he had the most dynamic relationship with Mettaton. It shifted from Mettaton hating him after learning his true identity to the two of them heavily relying on each other as both allies and friends. It was because of Mettaton that Asriel learned that forgiveness was something he had to earn and worked towards, and that his actions can't be so easily erased. He also felt a personal responsibility for Mettaton. Not just because he was the only other monster in Nyoi-Cho, but also because Asriel understood the dangers of being a magi and how difficult it was to adjust to having new magical abilities. So Asriel took on the role of Mettaton's teacher, showing him how to fight Nightmares and get a feel for his new powers.
Unfortunately, it was short-lived. An event that made Asriel mentally revert to his Flowey persona revealed the truth of his identity to Mettaton. The robot did not take the news well and threatened Asriel out of his house. Since Mettaton was also still dealing with the overwhelming despair of coming in from a recent genocide route, he ended up turning into a Nightmare.
Asriel and a few others ventured into Mettaton's Nightmare to save him, with Asriel going because he knew he was the one who caused it. After Mettaton was rescued, it forced a conversation between them, where Mettaton warily decided to see if Asriel was really capable of redeeming himself. The two of them proceeded to work together, their uneasy relationship smoothing out over time as they continued to back each other up. However, their conversation was a painful reminder to Asriel that he couldn't just run away from the things he did as Flowey. He decided that he would try to better himself for Mettaton in order to prove that he was worth redemption.
Their post-Nightmare conversation also revealed to Asriel that Mettaton was from a genocide route timeline, one apparently caused by Frisk. Asriel was both confused and horrified at what this could possibly mean. Without Frisk around to clarify what happened, Asriel assumed the worst and thought that after they had said their goodbyes, Frisk decided to reset and kill everyone after Asriel was taken to Nyoi-Cho.
Stewing in his own hurt and feeling that everything that was sacrificed to break the barrier now meant nothing, Asriel later thought of Frisk as someone who had saved him, only so that they could see him suffer all over again. When Asriel's life in Nyoi-Cho began to deteriorate, these feelings about Frisk only grew worse. It fueled Asriel's eventual belief that Chara had been right about humanity all along.
Regarding Chara, Asriel's opinion of them had shifted heavily as well. Once Asriel had belatedly learned that Chara was in Nyoi-Cho, he tried to seek them out past the one meeting they had in August. Their paths had crossed a few times, but it wasn't until a Nightmare fight in January that Asriel's feelings about Chara were put to the test. A dream version of Chara that Asriel mistook as real appeared during the Nightmare, trying to force Asriel to fight them. Asriel repeatedly shot down their attempts, pleading to let him save them. When Chara finally acknowledged Asriel's unwillingness to fight, they faded away and used the last of their power to help clear away Asriel's darkened soul gem. Asriel was finally forced to accept that Chara was permanently gone, and that their last action was to sacrifice themselves to save him. Unable to cope with the grief of losing them again, Asriel went from thinking that Chara "wasn't the greatest person" to putting them on a pedestal as a loving, self-sacrificing sibling. This ideal version of Chara was what Asriel clung to when he was faced with more hardship in the coming months.
March was the turning point for Asriel, as an incident that resulted in the murder of two girls would cause everything he believed in to shatter. Instead of trying to redeem himself and striving to become a better magi, he soon succumbed to fear and despair as his life rapidly fell apart.
An announcement over a website put everyone's morals to the test, when another magi named Kagaku revealed she kidnapped two girls. Every magi was forced to vote on which one was to live, while the other died. At the same time, a labyrinth filled with death traps had opened up under the school where the girls were supposedly being held. Groups of magi tried and failed to rescue them both, suffering severe causalities along the way. But the last attempt opened up a path to an elevator, and Asriel, Pokey, and Mettaton volunteered to try and rescue the girls. When they reached the elevator, they were given a choice to turn back or both girls would die. Despite the other magi telling them not to go through with it, Mettaton still thought it was better to try and save both girls, rather than just going back and voting for one of them die. Pokey and Asriel agreed, and Pokey pretended to get into an argument with Mettaton in order to fool Kagaku and force their way in to get to the girls. Asriel, a little unsure of what he was doing but who still wanted to come back a hero, tried to follow along with them. The plan unfortunately failed and as promised, both girls were murdered by Kagaku. After the death of the two hostages, Asriel's magi allies were furious with all three of them.
Asriel soon learned to fear mistakes after that. People he once considered friends and allies had more or less socially ostracized him for the incident, some of them calling for punishment or giving them the cold shoulder to teach them a lesson. Reminders of what the three of them had done were brought up over the next few months, enough to drive into Asriel's mind that he, without a doubt, was directly responsible for the death of those girls and that what he had done was unforgivable. He proceeded to become more passive and unsure of himself, afraid to make further decisions on his own.
To further his own fears and guilt, he saw how Pokey and Mettaton were treated by everyone else. Mettaton got the worst of it, so badly that it began to debilitate his own magi abilities and caused him to "fall down" when it became mentally overwhelming for him. The sheer guilt over Mettaton's death caused Asriel's HP to drop down to 1, making him incredibly frail.
Asriel also learned that Pokey's severed head was tossed around by Dito after a gruesome public post over the mirrors. Learning that there hadn't been too much outrage over that only made Asriel think that him, Mettaton, or Pokey could die and the rest of the magi would either not care or think it's "deserved". The more Asriel felt like an outcast, the more it cemented his friendships with Mettaton and Pokey. He saw them as the only ones left that he could rely on for support.
Shortly after Mettaton returned from death, the magi were forced into battle with a Witch. The Witch specifically targeted Asriel, Pokey, and Mettaton as "unforgivable magi" and did everything in her power to make them pay. She brainwashed the other magi into attacking the three of them, with Asriel himself included in the brainwashing. Partially influenced by the Witch and his own guilt, Asriel tried to take his own life with his sword. Ryoko desperately talked him down, and he hesitated just long enough for Lilith to finish the job and kill him.
Despite that the other magi were brainwashed into murdering him, Asriel still took his death very personally. He came to the conclusion that if he was this unforgivable just for being involved in the accidental death of those two girls, that his fellow magi would turn on and kill him if they knew what he'd done as Flowey. Terrified of them learning the truth, Asriel became more guarded and less of the gentle, kind boy that he once tried to be. After all, if his attempts to redeem himself ended with him being a murderer anyway, why keep trying to be good at all?
Those were Asriel's thoughts as started to act more like Flowey. Despite him being afraid of making decisions on his own, he became more reckless with his own well-being after deciding that he was no longer important to anyone here. His reputation didn't matter, because he would always be seen as a murderer. This was most apparent in his anonymous bulletin board posts, where he unknowingly admitted to Mettaton that he was fine with his own self-destruction and even encouraged Mettaton's murderous impulses. He later revealed to Mettaton his growing bitterness towards humans, claiming that if a monster kills a human they deserve to die, and that monsters only have worth if they're being good and listening to humans.
The only human that Asriel didn't have bitter feelings for, and who was able to consistently calm Asriel down during his worst moments, was Pokey. When Nightmare fights got too dangerous or something would happen to shake up Asriel's mental state, Pokey was always there to help him through it. Asriel began to see Pokey as an older brother figure, looking up to him for help when he needed it. Pokey was the first person that Asriel trusted enough to tell him what he'd done as Flowey, and in return Pokey was the first person to accept him for it anyway. He tried to help Asriel through his emotions and trauma that he was unable to deal with by himself, being the only person to ask Asriel why he felt the way he did. It created an unbreakable bond between them, as Asriel treated Pokey like family.
With his original goal of becoming a good magi and protecting his allies gone out the window, Asriel felt lost. After March, every magi was at each other's throats, and having anyone work together seemed impossible. With no one to protect or rely on, Asriel turned to protecting just Pokey and Mettaton and surviving as his only goal. It created a bitter Asriel, who no longer saw any kind of redemption for himself. With no choice but to continue forward, he felt that Chara may have been right about humanity all along.
Perhaps that horrible ideology of "kill or be killed" wasn't so wrong after all.
Abilities:
Using the power of his soul gem, Asriel can transform himself into a magi and use a variety of magical abilities. When transformed, Asriel's clothes change to look more like a purple version of this, and he gains a curved saber as a weapon. His soul gem also becomes a part of his magi outfit, taking the form of a heart-shaped jewel locket around his neck. In his transformed state, Asriel can use the following abilities:
-Asriel can summon vines from his hand.
-He can summon a fist-sized fireball.
-He can use Star Blazing, which causes three, large star-shaped objects to crash into the ground and explode where they land. Using this ability is too powerful for Asriel at his current experience level, to the point where he can't properly control it. One use is enough to render Asriel unable to move or walk for the entire day.
-Asriel can summon sharp-tipped roses to throw at enemies.
-Asriel's fur can swell up, making him into a fluffy round ball of fur. It protects him from attacks, but the downside is that he can't move or attack at all in this form unless he reverts back to his normal self.
When he isn't transformed, Asriel can use the following abilities:
-Anyone who touches or hugs Asriel will experience a pleasant memory, a song, a familiar scent, or feel that someone they deeply care about is standing near them. It's an ability to comfort upset teammates and is at its strongest the more upset someone is. This ability can also heal minor to moderate wounds. Minor injuries taking an hour to fully heal, while moderate injuries take a full day.
Asriel's soul gem will also take the form of a ring when he's untransformed.
Inventory: Just his clothes, his soul gem, a kid-sized trench coat, and a kid's wallet from the TV series "Orange Ninja Hero".
